Top 10 Shows: Some Of The Best Theatre Coming Up This Week

As we end August and start moving into September, things are starting to look a bit more hopeful. While the bigger theatres are still closed, some are opening their doors again and bringing us some brilliant productions such as Sleepless which opened in previews last week and has its press night this week.


Here's a round up of some of the best theatre you can catch over the next 7 days both online and in person.


ONLINE

WHAT?

The stage version of My Beautiful Laundrette played at Curve Leicester last year. The show features music composed by The Pet Shop Boys and tells the story of a laundrette being turned into a thriving business while dealing with fascist gangs in the area. An archived filming of a dress rehearsal is being put online.

WHEN?

The show will be uploaded on Wednesday 2nd September at 6pm and will stay up until the theatre opens its doors again

WHERE?


WHAT?

Seth Rudetsky's weekly concert series shows no signs of slowing down with some of Broadways best lining up to perform every week. This week is the turn of Sierra Boggess who has been in in The Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies and The Little Mermaid to name but a few.

WHEN?

The concert goes out live on Sunday 30th August at 8pm ET which is 1am in the UK and is repeated on Monday 31st August at 3pm ET, 8pm in the UK.

WHERE?

WHAT?

The Theatre Cafe are re-launching their Live series with a concert from star of &Juliet, Tim Mahendran. Tim will perform a mix of show tunes and pop songs accompanied by Josh Winstone. The concert has been pre-recorded live from the cafe

WHEN?

The concert airs tonight (Sunday 30th August) at 7pm

WHERE?


WHAT?

The first project by Resolute Productions is an adaptation of Darknet by Rose Lewenstein. The play navigates through the world of data commodification and the uncharted deep web, shining a light on the things we choose to share online and the places we can hide.

WHEN?

The play will be available for 24 hours only from 8pm on Saturday 5th September until 8pm on Sunday 6th September

WHAT?

The classic dance movie Center Stage celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. To celebrate the cast are reuniting for a virtual fundraiser. Appearing in the reunion are Zoe Saldana, Amanda Schull, Sascha Radetsky and Ethan Stiefel. They will be raising funds for the American Ballet Theatre's Crisis Relief Fund.

WHEN?

Tuesday 1st September at 7.30pm EST which will be 12.30am in the UK.

WHERE?

IN PERSON


WHAT?

Mischief Theatre are the team responsible for sensations The Play That Goes Wrong, Magic Goes Wrong and The Comedy About A Bank Robbery (that doesn't go wrong). They are now bringing back their improvised show Mischief Movie Night where the audience are in charge. God help us all!

WHEN?

The team are doing a whopping 9 shows this week. First up are 3 shows at Open Air Theatre on Bank Holiday Monday (31st August) at 3pm, 6pm and 9pm (I'll be catching one of them myself) followed by 6 shows throughout the week at the Minack Theatre. All shows bar the 9pm one on Monday are sold out though so if you do want to catch them, be quick!

WHERE?

Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park Monday 31st August, Minack Theatre in Cornwall from Wednesday 2nd September to Saturday 5th September.

WHAT?

It's another West End Musical Drive In this week and this one features more ex-wives than you can shake a stick at (Why would you even shake a stick?). Seventeen past and present Queens from Six are joining forces for a massive concert featuring songs from the global sensation as well as others.

WHEN?

The show is taking place on Saturday 5th September at 3.30pm.

WHERE?

WHAT?

It's a big week for the limited Turbine Theatre on the Jetty season. First up is a concert 'The Best of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' for all the Jersey Boys fans followed by four performances of a concert production of the classic Hair starring Jordan Luke Gage, Jodie Steele and Layton Williams among others.

WHEN?

The Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons tribute is on Monday 31st August with Hair performing through the 4th to the 6th September.

WHERE?

The theatre is located adjacent to The Turbine Theatre in Battersea. All performances for this week have now sold out though.


WHAT?

The Bridge Theatre became the second London venue to open its doors last week. A season of monologues from some of the West ends finest awaits over the next two months. First is a one person play from David Hare, starring Ralph Fiennes. Beat The Devil is about David Hare's own experience with contracting Covid-19.

WHEN?

The show runs until Saturday 12th September before returning for another run in late October.

WHERE?

WHAT?

The World Goes 'Round is a celebration of the music of John Kander and the lyrics of Fred Ebb from their hits Chicago, Cabaret, The Rink, Kiss of a Spiderwoman, Liza with A Z and more. The show opened last week as the closing production of the fantastic Barnfest at the Barn Theatre. Early reviews have said what a triumph this is so catch it while you can as it closes this week.

WHEN?

The show runs until Saturday 5th September at 6pm every day.
