July Preview: 40 Of The Hottest Shows To See This Month

Summer is here and while many of us will be going on holiday, theatre doesn’t take a holiday as this month brings with it some exciting new openings in the West End and all over the UK. Here are 40 of the hottest shows to see this month:


TILL THE STARS COME DOWN (Theatre Royal Haymarket)



1st July - 27th September


National Theatre’s smash-hit sold-out production transfers to the West nd, inviting audiences to Sylvia and Marek’s wedding as a family gathers to welcome a newcomer into their midst.



RUN SISTER RUN (Arcola Theatre)



2nd - 26th July


The London premiere of this gripping story of resilience and survival from award-winning playwright Chloe Moss explores the destructive and redemptive power of family bonds.



WILKO: LOVE AND DEATH AND ROCK N ROLL (Leicester Square Theatre)



3rd - 27th July


The extraordinary story of the rock 'n' roll icon, founder of the legendary band Dr Feelgood, and Game of Thrones star. Wilko Johnson is a hilarious, moving, exciting mixture of drama, comedy, and live rock 'n' roll.



NYE (Olivier Theatre)



3rd July – 16th August

 

Tim Price’s celebrated Welsh fantasia, which charts the life of Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan and his battle to create the NHS returns to National Theatre. Directed by Rufus Norris, it will also play at Wales Millennium Centre with Michael Sheen returning to the lead role.

 


BEAUTIFUL WORLD CABARETS (Charing Cross Theatre)



5th - 13th July


Janie Dee curates a special series of cabarets, exploring our natural world by unique artists who have each undertaken their own personal journey, exploring and reflecting on the place nature holds in their lives and the sense of wonder it evokes.



35mm: A MUSICAL EXHIBITION (Phoenix Arts Club)



7th - 8th July


A theatrical song cycle like no other, 35mm weaves together music and photography in a genre-bending exploration of love, obsession, ambition, and art.



THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (Globe Theatre)



4th July - 20th September


Discover what lies beneath the Elizabethan social order as Shakespeare’s raucous comedy reveals its wild, mythic and daring underbelly.



THE ADDAMS FAMILY (UK Tour)



7th July - 23rd August


Alexandra Burke, Lesley Joseph, Clive Rowe, Ricardo Afonson, Lauren Jones, Jacob Fowler and Nicholas Mclean star in this spectacular musical comedy about everyone’s favourite kooky family.



JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL (Adelphi Theatre)



8th July


Two time Tony Award-winning star of stage and screen takes the West End stage for the very first time with special guests including Boy George, Divina De Campo and Mason Alexander Park.



SING STREET (Lyric Hammersmith)

 


8th July – 23rd August

 

The UK premiere of this new musical based on the 2016 movie by John Carney is a heartfelt, joyous coming-of-age story set in 1980s Dublin and  is directed by Tony Award winner Rebecca Taichman.

 


THE WHITE CHIP (Southwark Playhouse Borough)



9th July - 16th August


Told with humour, honesty, and compassion, this new play is about living with addiction and coming alive through recovery.



THE ESTATE (Dorfman Theatre)



9th July - 23rd August


Adeel Akhtar stars in this razor-sharp exploration of family, power and the lies we tell about ourselves.



THAT BASTARD, PUCCINI! (Park Theatre)



10th July - 9th August


This hilarious, chaotic and captivating new play by James Inverne brings to life an explosive professional rivalry, a plagiarism scandal that rocked Europe, and a friendship tested to the limit.



DON’T ROCK THE BOAT (The Mill at Sonning)



10th July - 6th September


In a wild ride down the Thames, the tranquil river waters turn into a storm in a teacup as Robin Hawdon’s brilliant comedy unfolds



BURLESQUE (Savoy Theatre)



10th July - 6th September


After runs in Glasgow and Manchester last year, the stage adaptation of the beloved film heads to the West End starring Jess Follet, Todrick Hall and Orfeh.



INTER ALIA (Lyttlelton Theatre)



10th July - 13th September


A searing new play from the team behind Prima Facie, Rosamund Pike makes her National Theatre debut as Jessica in this examination of modern masculinity and motherhood.



FOUR PLAY (King’s Head Theatre)



11th July - 17th August


Daniel Bravo, Lewis Cornay, Jo Foster, and Zheng Xi Yong star in Jack Sain’s new revival of Jake Brunger’s provocative comedy that interrogates the unspoken rules of modern relationships and the fragile balance between intimacy and freedom.



MELISSA ERRICO: SONDHEIM IN THE CITY (Cadogan Hall)



12th July


The Tony-nominated Broadway star brings the genius of Sondheim to life in a magical night featuring Julian Ovenden on guest vocals.



JEREMY JORDAN (Royal Albert Hall)

12th July


The beloved leading man of Broadway, television and film returns to London with his biggest ever solo concert in a celebration of his blockbuster career.



THE WINTER’S TALE (Royal Shakespeare Theatre)


12th July - 30th August


Directed by Yaël Farber and featuring double Olivier and Tony Award-winner Bertie Carvel, this reimagined tale is brought vividly to life through Soutra Gilmour’s elemental set and costume design, and striking lighting design by Tim Lutkin.



ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Marylebone Theatre)



12th July - 31st August


This internationally celebrated production brings Lewis Carroll’s delightful chaos to life with extraordinary puppets, exquisite costumes and an original score that will captivate audiences of all ages.



POOR CLARE (Orange Tree Theatre)


12th July - 9th August


Arsema Thomas stars alongside Freddy Carter in this hilarious and off-beat comedy inspired by the stories of Saint Clare and Saint Francis of Assisi.



TOP HAT (Chichester Festival Theatre)



14th July - 6th September


Based on the classic film, Kathleen Marshall stages this brand new production starring Phillip Attmore, Lucy St. Louis, Clive Carter and Sally Ann Triplett.


MONA LOSER (Southwark Playhouse Borough)



16th - 19th July


Inspired by Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ and set to a slick, high-energy pop score, this sharp, satirical musical follows an unsuspecting girl as she’s pushed into the spotlight to play the part of a viral sensation.



101 DALMATIANS (Eventim Apollo)

 


18th July – 30th August

 

Following a successful UK tour, the new musical version of Dodie Smith’s classic book transfers to London for a strictly limited run starring Sydnie Christmas, Aston Merrygold and Jeff Brazier.


THE DAUGHTER OF TIME (Charing Cross Theatre)

A world premiere adapted from Josephine Tey’s classic novel, M. Kilburg Reedy’s new play swirls together history, myth, comic disasters and irresistible romance.



ROUGH MAGIC (Sam Wanamaker Playhouse)



19th July - 23rd August


The Globe’s family show is back as Macbeth’s wonderfully wayward Weird Sisters cook up a supernaturally silly adventure of their own in the world of Shakespeare’s magical characters.



MAIDEN VOYAGE (Southwark Playhouse Elephant)

Chelsea Halfpenny stars in this epic true story that comes to life in a sweeping, extraordinary new musical.

EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN (Jermyn Street Theatre)

Compton Mackenzie‘s beloved 1928 comic novel bursts onto the stage for the first time with a score by Sarah Travis and lyrics by Richard Stirling in a joyous, musical celebration of women who dare to live a life more extraordinary!



HOT MESS (Birmingham Hippodrome)



24th - 25th July


Danielle Steers and Tobias Turley star in this brand new musical from Jack Godfrey and Ellie Coote about the relationship between the Earth and humanity. Catch it for two days only in Birmingham before it heads to this year's Edinburgh Fringe.



HEDDA (Theatre Royal Bath)

Matthew Dunster writes and directs this re-imagining of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler with Lily Allen starring as the enigmatic and destructive title role.

26th July - 30th August

LITTLE DANCER (Theatre Royal Drury Lane)

A new musical based on the story of Marie van Goethem gets its highly anticipated UK premiere starring Tiler Peck.



SAVING MOZART (The Other Palace)



28th July - 30th August


Aimie Atkinson, Jack Chambers, Erin Caldwell, Jordan Luke Gage and Douglas Hansell star in this bold new musical based on a powerful true story of passion, defiance and music that refused to die.



THE DIANA MIXTAPE (HERE@Outernet)

Telling the story of the People’s Princess in a concert/musical/event like nothing you have experienced before. Featuring a soundtrack of pop classics performed by Keala Settle and drag superstars including Courtney Act, Divina De Campo, Rose, Kitty Scott-Claus and Priyanka.
