It was announced a while ago that a film adaptation of the musical version of Matilda is in the works. That's a movie version of a musical version of a book that was previously a movie. Are you still with me?
More information about the forthcoming release including initial casting has been unveiled tonight.
Emma Thompson has been cast as Miss Trunchbull in a role that will be reconceived for the new movie version. Previously, Ralph Fiennes had been tipped to play the role,
It was rumoured last week that Lashana Lynch will play Miss Honey - that has now been confirmed. The title role of Matilda will be played by 11 year old Alisha Weir. Over 200 children are rehearsing to play her classmates.
The film will begin shooting in early April. No release date has been given yet but expect it sometime in 2022 with the film released in cinemas through TriStar in the UK and distributed worldwide on Netflix.
Director Matthew Warchus said: "Matilda will be an imaginative and fresh retelling of the award-winning musical, Matilda, featuring talented young newcomers, alongside established stars. I look forward to introducing this beloved and powerful story to a new generation of fans around the world."
The musical version by Tim Michin celebrates its 10th anniversary in the West End this year. In a note in the Palladium Panto programme, Andrew Lloyd Webber said the show will be returning in early 2021 so expect a return date as soon as we know when theatres are able to reopen.
After what we have all been through in the last year, a feelgood movie like Matilda is just what the Doctor ordered. Though I wonder how many parents will be sympathising with Miss Trunchbull after having to homeschool their children?
More informationwill be posted as it comes through.
