10 Of The Best: Theatre You Can Catch This Week

After months of posting the highlights of theatre you can watch online every single week, it's time for a change. Think of it like Les Miserables losing the revolve and launching a new production instead. Unlike that though, I am not going to have an all star concert for 16 weeks before moving on to the new format. Instead, the new format starts today.


Each week I will now post about the best shows you can watch online as they become available throughout the week but will now also include shows you can catch in person as, thank the Lord (Andrew Lloyd Webber) as we now have some theatres open. We still have a long way to go obviously but I know so many of us are appreciative of the fact we can sit in open air theatres for now.


Without any further ado, here is the best of the bunch of this weeks lot starting with shows you can catch online:


ONLINE


WHAT?

West End Workshops Live are presenting a star studded concert for one night only. Among the names appearing in the event are Kerry Ellis, Nikki Bentley, Sophie Isaacs and Lizzie Bea among others. The event is in aid of Acting For Others.

WHAT?

Hundred Acre Productions are doing a series of online graduate concerts. The series features recent graduates who have had their final months of training interrupted due to the worldwide pandemic and the concert will celebrate the music of songwriters Dan & Laura Curtis

WHEN?

Tonight (Sunday 9th August) at 7pm

WHERE?


WHAT?

Seth Rudetsky's weekly concert series continues tonight with Tony nominee and Emmy winner Liz Callaway. Liz boasts Cats, Merrily We Roll Along and Miss Saigon among her theatre credits. Next weeks concert features Stephanie J. Block.

WHEN?

Catch it live on Sunday 9th August at 8pm ET (1am on Monday in the UK) and repeated on Monday 10th August at 3pm ET, 8pm in the UK

WHAT?

Streaming website BroadwayHD have added a number of new titles to their already stellar lineup of musicals. If you missed any of the titles in the weekly The Shows Must Go On series, you're in luck as a number of them have been added to the website including Cats, Billy Elliot, Miss Saigon, Love Never Does, The Phantom of The Opera, Les Miserables, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar

WHAT?

The Barn Theatre have spent the last few months adding to their 'The Barn Presents' series which specialises in celebrating the music of British musical theatre composers. This week is the sixth installment and features Dominic Powell. The show will see Dominic chat with the Barn theatre producer Jamie Chapman Dixon about his career so far and will include special performances from a glittering cast including Waylon Jacobs, Maiya Quansah-Breed, Courtney Stapleton and Oliver Savile among others. After this, there will be a concert celebrating the music of Gus Gowland two weeks later.

WHEN?

Due to technical difficulties, the show was due to air last night but that's good news for you as it means you can catch the premiere tonight (Sunday 9th August) at 7.30pm instead.

IN PERSON


WHAT?

Probably the biggest show to take place this summer, Open Air Theatre pulled out all the stops to get this concert version of Jesus Christ Superstar organised in time. The show features a cast of phenomenal talent including Tyrone Huntley and Declan Bennett.

WHEN?

The theatre opens its doors again on Friday 14th August for a limited season. The first few dates are sold out but tickets are available for later in its run. I'm seeing it myself on Saturday and can't wait.

WHERE?

Tickets can be bought from https://openairtheatre.com/production/jesus-christ-superstar-the-concert. The venue is in Regents Park in the heart of London.


WHAT?

Natasha Barnes won universally praise for her performance in Funny Girl, stepping in for Sheridan Smith as she took time off. Now she joins forces with comedienne Vikki Stone for a show called 'Funny Gals' (See what they did there?) telling the story of funny women in musicals.

WHEN?

Following performances at BarnFest last week, the show hits London for one night only on Wednesday 12th August

WHERE?

The show is part of the New Normal Festival in Wandsworth. Tickets cost £14 and are available from https://newnormalfest.co.uk/whats-on


WHAT?

Who doesn't love a bit of Showstopper? If you haven't seen it before, they make a show up on the spot entirely by audience suggestions. You decide the musical style, the setting and the title of the show and their brilliant brains do the rest.

WHEN?

This week they have 3 shows in London as part of The New Normal Festival. Catch them on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th August at 8pm and a special kids matinee show on Saturday at 2pm. Let's just hope nobody requests Sweeney Todd for that one.

WHAT?

The outdoor theatre festival Barnfest continue this week with The Wind In The WIllows and Instructions For A Teenage Armageddon.

WHEN?

Both shows run from 10th - 15th August at various times throughout the day

WHERE?

The festival is in Cirencester. Tickets available from https://barntheatre.org.uk/


WHAT?

The story of two Victorian Drag Queens was the first show to open in London since lockdown and has been incredibly well received.

WHEN?

The show began its run last week. A few tickets are available for this Wednesday 12th August

WHERE?
